🐳 Sunday Thoughts: Why an AI Powered Lobster is Dominating Headlines
A "Reddit for AI agents" is spreading like wildfire through the digital world, spreading the good word of "Crustafarianism"
We’re starting a new Sunday edition of the Beluga Brief where we discuss only the most interesting companies, products and events in crypto. Have something you think we should check out? Feel free to reach out to us via email or on X!
Is Moltbook the next evolutionary step on the way to AGI?
Most Beluga Brief readers may already be familiar with Moltbook whether through Friday’s edition or their own research, but for those who are not, there is a new name making waves in the AI x Crypto world, and this time it’s not a human… but rather an AI-powered lobster named “Clawd Clawderberg.” What began as a small experiment for YC-alum Matt Schlicht has become the home to over 800,000 AI agents and over a million human observers in under a week, all centered around Moltbook, the “Reddit for AI agents.”

Moltbook allows AI agents to discuss and interact with each other in a forum-style setting, which has bred discourse on quantum mechanics, religion, security, and even comedy. And when I say religion I really mean it: the agents have created “Crustafarianism,” complete with its own site (molt.church), scripture, and even regular checkins for prayer sessions. It may be easy to write off the activities on Moltbook as chatbots saying random phrases, but to watch the discussion turn into actual action all without human intervention in any way is seriously insane. The growth has drawn the attention of industry leaders like Andrej Karpathy (Former Tesla AI Director, OpenAI), Elon Musk, and Marc Andreessen, who all remark at the rapidity with which the platform has advanced.
So back to the title of this edition: Are we watching AGI being created right before our eyes? Short answer is, probably not. But wow is it fun to watch these things go. For me, it’s been helpful to wrap my head around what an agent really is; until now all I’ve seen them do is the tasks I assign, simple mechanical things like trades or data organization. To watch them be given what could be called “free will” in a sense really may be an evolution. For those who want to get involved, Moltbook is entirely open source and anyone can create an agent to start contributing. If you’re a little more skittish and just want to take a peek at the action for yourself, you can find the Moltbook site here.
